This charitable organization was founded by Mr. Phil Nuccio in 2013. Mr Nuccio is a disabled veteran and previous owner/operator of M-D Plumbing & Heating Company in Chicago, Illinois (retired in 2001).
Mr. Nuccio retired to rural Northeast Wisconsin and noticed the lack of specialized medical facilities available for children in the area. Kids with chronic and life-threatening illness like cancer, epilepsy, and diabetes, often must travel 3+ hours for specialized care. With a desire to bring that much needed care closer to home, Mr. Nuccio began working on a plan to establish clinics in Wausaukee and other rural areas.
Why Edith Stein? Mr. Nuccio chose his organization's name for personal reasons. Edith Stein, also known as St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, was born in 1922, in what is now Poland. Her father died when she was just two years old, leaving her mother to raise Edith and her six siblings while running the family business, a lumberyard. Edith excelled at school in the area of philosophy. After reading St. Theresa of Avila's autobiography, she converted to Catholicism, which deeply disappointed her Jewish mother and friends. In April 1934, Edith entered the novitiate at the Carmelite convent in Cologne, Germany, taking the name Teresa of Benedicta of the Cross. She died, along with her sister Rosa, at Auschwitz on August 9, 1942. Edith Stein was canonized in 1998 by Pope John Paul II.
Mr. Nuccio admired Edith Stein for her intelligence, her strong faith and her willingness to campaign publicly for women's rights and education.
Contributions quickly came in and plans were underway to break ground on a medical facility in Wausaukee, Wisconsin, when Mr. Nuccio's health became an issue. Medical tests confirmed that he was suffering the effects of being exposed to Agent Orange during the Vietnam campaign. The specialized medical facility plans came to screeching halt while Mr. Nuccio got his health under control. He is now ready to continue his mission.
As of Today 3/27/2021 I will try to bring things up to date. Several months ago the organization was blessed with angel to help in the office. But as it is, "The Lord giveith and the Lord take it away on my fault. Some time later I ran in to a women whom I worked with at Saint Augustine Church some 20 years ago. Mrs. S. Schilies proved to be a Great assist to the organization. She has excellent computer skills. Licity split she gave our website a most wonderful face lift. She quickly grasped the mission of the of the organization and began research which produced many important documents. As life would have it, "The Lord Giveith and the Lord Takith away". Again, because of my fault she is gone!
Because of Mrs. Schlies outstanding organizational skills, proved to be excellent in preparing Letters of Invitation to many of the major Hospitals
in our area. As so, we have received correspondence from St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay, WI, St .Jude Research Center, Tenn. ,and Mayo Clinic, Minn.
A letter was recently sent to the Governor of Wisconsin with about 1700 petitions' with concerns of families and children living in rural areas with NO medical facilities!!!
